Port Ellen Distillery produced whisky from 1825 to 1929. In 1967, renovated and re-equipped, it began the final chapter of its history.
When it closed in 1983, it was the smallest of three distilleries on Islay owned by DCL, and with the bear market for whisky in full swing, it had no chance of survival. Today, the property is home to a large malting plant, Port Ellen Maltings, owned by Diageo. In October 2017, the group announced that it would rebuild the facility and resume distilling. In the new century, Diageo has included Port Ellen in its prestigious Special Releases series many times. The sixth release from 2006, presented here, was distilled in 1978 and bottled at 54.2% abv. The edition consisted of 4,560 bottles.
