Product description
Vineyard Barón de Ley is today one of the most recognized producers in the Rioja region of northern Spain. However, her story is much more unusual than the typical tale of a family bodega. This is because the winery is based in the former benedictine monastery from the 16th century in the town of Mendavia, in the Navarra region, near the Ebro River. Over the centuries, the site changed hands - it belonged to monks, then to the aristocracy and the military - before the 1980s. In the 1970s it was transformed into a modern winery.
The modern winery was established in 1985 by a group of entrepreneurs and winemakers who decided to create a producer based on the classic structure of large châteaux - with a large vineyard acreage of their own and full control over production. As a result, Barón de Ley today has more than 600 hectares of its own vineyards, which is rare in Rioja, where many producers buy grapes from outside suppliers.
The vineyards are located at elevations reaching about 800 meters n.p.m., where a continental climate with marked temperature differences between day and night favors slow ripening of grapes. Such conditions maintain the balance between sugar and acidity in the fruit, which is particularly important in the production of aromatic and fresh wines.
One of the interesting facts is that the winery is designed in a manner reminiscent of old European wine estates - most of the production is made from grapes sourced exclusively from the winery's own plots of land. As a result, the style of the wines remains very consistent, and the producer can fully control the quality of the raw material. Although Rioja is primarily known for its powerful tempranillo red wines, Barón de Ley is also known for its elegant white wines and modern interpretations of the region's style.
