John Dewar started his own business in 1846, and a dozen or so years later he made his first attempts at blending whisky. The Dewar's brand was registered in 1891 and within a few years it had achieved worldwide success.

It remains the most popular Scotch whisky overseas, although its global sales have recently fallen to 2.8 million cases. Since 1998, the brand has been owned by Bacardi Ltd., which significantly expanded its offering at the beginning of the new century.
