- The brewery Appenzell, located in Swiss Alps, was established in 1886 by the Locher family. In 1999 the Lochers started producing whisky following revocation of the federal law banning the distillation of spirits from grain.

The Appenzell brewery was built in 1886 in the Swiss Alps by the Locher family.
In 1999, after the repeal of federal regulations banning distilling from grains, the Lochers began producing whiskey based primarily on locally grown barley, which, exposed to extreme mountain conditions, is characterized by great vitality. The 17th edition of Alpstein is a whiskey aged for 5 years in beer barrels and finished for another 2 years in Caribbean rum barrels. The drink was bottled at 48% ABV in March 2021 in an edition limited to 2,421 half-liter bottles.
Nose: barley malt, caramel, coconut flakes, vanilla, pralines, honeydew melon, orange peel, candied ginger and oak.
Palate: caramel, vanilla pudding, milk fudge, sugared peanuts, coconut, notes of ginger and white pepper.
Finish: quite long, with notes of caramel, vanilla, coconut flakes, cinnamon, ginger and oak.
