Togouchi whisky debuted in 2003 and for a dozen or so years, blends made from Scottish and Canadian distillates were introduced to the market under this brand, additionally aged in a 361-meter-long abandoned railway tunnel.
In 2018, the brand's owner, Chugoku Jozo, celebrated its 100th anniversary by building a small whisky distillery, Sakurao, based near Hiroshima. The whiskies are aged both in the warehouse at the distillery and in the aforementioned tunnel. It debuted in the summer of 2021 in two versions - Sakurao, aged in Hiroshima, and Togouchi, aged in the aforementioned tunnel. The historic Togouchi Cask Strength edition presented here, the work of master distiller Taihei Yamamoto, is based on bourbon and sherry casks. It won a gold medal at the World Wine & Spirits Competition in New York.
Aroma: malty and fruity, bananas, apples, apricots, sultanas, vanilla, toffee, mocha, sweet bread, notes of nutmeg and cinnamon.
Palate: slightly alcoholic, honey, vanilla, milk chocolate, apples, peaches, orange peel, banana cake, cinnamon, cloves and oak.
Finish : medium long, with notes of vanilla, white pepper, nutmeg, a touch of summer fruits and oak tannins.
