Royal Brackla Distillery is based in Cawdor, close to the setting of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
Indeed, Macbeth was the ruler of Cawdor and took the throne after murdering King Duncan. After a 17-year reign, he was killed by his son Malcolm. Royal Brackla is now owned by John Dewar & Sons, a subsidiary of Bacardi Ltd, and produces 4.2 million litres of alcohol per year. In late 2019, the company announced a change to its core offering with a 12-year-old Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish, an 18-year-old Palo Cortado Sherry Cask Finish and a 21-year-old finished in Oloroso, Palo Cortado and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The final maturation takes place in first-fill casks and the whiskies are bottled at 46% abv and without chill filtration.
Nose: slightly subdued, vanilla cream, meringues, apples, pears, grapefruit, roasted nuts and almonds, brown sugar, traces of pine needles and oak.
Palate : vanilla, toffee, lemon tart, nectarines, raisins, pink grapefruit, almond butter, green tea, candied ginger, white pepper, mint leaf and oak.
Finish : medium long, with notes of roasted peanuts, citrus, ginger, pepper and oak.
