Chichibu Distillery was the first whisky distillery built in Japan in the 21st Century.
It was founded by Ichiro Akuto in 2007 and went into production in the spring of 2008. The distillery as well as its founder scored number of prestigious awards; in 2019 Akuto-san was crowned Master Distiller of the Year at the International Spirit Challenge. The year before he started construction of Chichibu 2 Distillery, which ran first production test on July 9, 2019. Ichiro’s Malt & Grain is marketed by its creator as ‘World Blended Whisky’. The key component of the limited edition presented here is Chichibu malt complimented with whiskies sourced from undisclosed distilleries in Scotland, Ireland, United States and Canada. The whisky was bottled at 48% abv as oppose to standard version of 46.5% abv.
Nose: sweet cereals, apple blossom, green apples, bananas, pears, coconut flakes, lemon grass, mint, cinnamon and a touch of cardamom.
Palate: toffee, caramel, vanilla, marzipan, cappuccino, orange marmalade, baked apples, licorice, ginger, dash of caraway and delicate oaky bitterness.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of vanilla, coconut shavings, milk chocolate, aniseed, ginger, licorice and oak.
