Product description
Ferdinand's Saar Gin owes its name to Ferdinand Geltz, a Prussian forest manager and founder of Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Zilken, one of the most famous German wineries.
The area is rich in incredibly fertile soil, which is why most of the botanicals in the gin presented here come from their own gardens. The gin formula was developed by Dorothee Zilliken from the Geltz-Zilliken estate and Andreas Vallendar, whose family has owned the Avadis distillery for 270 years. First, Andreas distills spirit from locally grown grains, which will be the base of the gin, then macerates 30 ingredients listed in the gin formula. The list includes lavender, juniper, sloe, lemon thyme, rosehips, angelica, hops, as well as almond shells, coriander, ginger, grapefruit and in this case quince. After the distillation process is complete, Andreas adds a small amount of Scheifer Riesling to the distillate and marries the resulting mixture for a month.
Ferdinand's Saar Quince is bottled at less than 37.5% ABV, which excludes it from the gin category. Served chilled, it is a great alternative to dessert wines, especially when paired with apple pie or a cheeseboard. Its palette combines sweet fruit and honey notes with oriental spices and a generous dose of herbs.
