- The Melvale Distillery was built in the 1880s in northern Baltimore.
Product description
Melvale Distillery was founded in the 1880s on the north side of Baltimore.
At the turn of the century, it produced one of the most prestigious whiskeys in Maryland—its wholesale price for a quarter gallon was $1.45, compared to a mere dollar for Old Taylor bourbon. The distillery closed with Prohibition and never reopened. However, the Melvale brand returned to the market in 2016, as part of Philadelphia’s New Liberty Distillery’s Heritage Collection. The whiskey was distilled to a formula of 51 percent rye and 49 percent malted barley, according to the label, in IN (meaning MGP, Indiana) and aged for two years in charred American oak barrels. In the 19th century, rye whiskey was distilled in Maryland from a mash bill with a lower rye content than in neighboring Pennsylvania (Maryland style and Pennsylvania style).
