Hellyers Road, founded 1999, is the largest Australian malt whisky distillery with the capacity of producing 100 000 liters of alcohol per annum.
It is equipped with a single pair of stills, interestingly the pots of both stills are made of stainless steel, while necks, heads and lyne arms are made of copper. The distillery is named after Henry Hellyer, the 19th Century explorer and cartographer, who in 1827 carved out the road out of Tasmanian bush, which today leads to the distillery. The Pinot Noir Finish expression, voted the Best New World Whisky in 2013 comprises whisky aged in white American oak barrels and finished for six months in Pinot Noir casks sourced from one of the wineries located in Tamar Valley (Tasmania).
Nose: fruity and floral, ripe grapes, dates, plums, candied orange and lemon peel, vanilla, milk chocolate, walnuts and hints of cedar wood.
Palate: fruity with delicate wood smoke notes, pineapple, honeydew melon, raisins, vanilla, toffee, dash of pepper and delicate grassy notes.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of vanilla, honey, hints of pepper, tobacco and oak.
