Product description
When Spanish ships sailed for the New World in the late 17th century, their holds carried, among other things, barrels of Spanish wine, including sherry.
On the way back, to avoid transporting empty barrels, they were filled with local rum, called Chinguirito. During the journey, the rum had time to react with the oak barrels that had previously carried sherry and gain a wider bouquet of aromas and flavors. It became so popular in Spain that it was seen as competition for local spirits. This rum was soon banned in Spain. Hence the name "El Ron Prohibido" - banned rum. It was not until the end of the 18th century that this ban was lifted, and the Mexican chinguirito trade was seen as a serious source of income for the Spanish treasury. Income that was so badly needed in the war with England. Today, El Prohibido rum is a product of the same spirits company as Corralejo tequila.
El Ron Prohibido Reserva is a spirit produced in Mexico and matured for 15 years in the solera system in Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels. In its bouquet we find accents of dried fruit, raisins and dried plums, chocolate, coffee, caramel and vanilla.
