Product description
In 1979 Bowmore Distillery celebrated its 200th anniversary. Built in 1779 by John Simpson, it is now the oldest distillery still in operation on Islay.
Since 1963, it has been owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers, which in turn is currently part of the Beam Suntory group. In 1979, on the occasion of the anniversary, Bowmore Distillery offered several occasional, limited editions, including 1964 Vintage, 12 years old and the most interesting, Bicentenary 1779-1979 bottled without an age statement. In a wooden box, next to the bottle, there was a certificate signed by the board members, stating that "this whisky was composed of distillates from the 1950s and 1960s (the oldest 29 years old, distilled in 1950), aged in top quality sherry casks". The whisky was presented in a dark decanter, a replica of vessels used in the late 18th century. Just over 20,000 similar decanters were filled. Bowmore Centenary is one of the rarest and most collectible whiskies from this distillery. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a chance to taste this nectar, but in the past we managed to try Bowmore distilled in the 1960s and aged in sherry casks and it was almost perfect. Many Bowmore connoisseurs and collectors share our opinion on this matter.
