Product description
In the 1970s, Gordon & MacPhail launched the "Pride of the Regions" series, consisting of four whiskies – Pride of Islay, Pride of Orkney, Pride of Strathspey and Pride of the Lowlands.
These were 12 year old blended malts (then called vatted malts) bottled at 40% abv to reflect the character of the whisky produced in the regions. Pride of Strathspey most likely contained whisky from the Dalwhinnie distillery, which was originally called the Strathspey Distillery.
From the 1950s to the late 1980s Gordon & MacPhail also held a licence to bottle and distribute Macallan. For some reason this licence was suspended for about 15 years, which prevented the Macallan name from being used on the labels. To maintain distribution Gordon & MacPhail released Macallan as another ‘brand’, one of which was Pride of Strathspey.
We cannot guarantee that the bottle presented here is filled with Macallan single malt, there is no such doubt in the case of Pride of Speyside 1938. However, there is a chance that the 1946 vintage comes from the same source. On both labels the "Bottler" does not mention Gordon & MacPhail but James Gordon & Co. However, whether this can be considered convincing evidence we leave to your judgment.
