Silver Seal, an Independent Bottling Company, might be lesser known among average whisky drinkers, yet it is very well known among whisky collectors and aficionados.
The company is considered the informal heir to the legendary Italian whisky bottler Sestante, which ceased operation in the 1990s. Silver Seal made its name for excellent cask selection and in the New Millennium has been showing a lot of activity. The 21 years old Port Ellen, part of the Missing Collection, was bottled in October 2003 at 46% abv with an outrun of 375 bottles.
Nose: peaty, smoky and mineral, seaweed, seashells, moist wool, hints of rubber, pepper, green apples, lemon peel and delicate herbal notes.
Palate: smoky and slightly oily, sea breeze, smoked oysters, lemon juice, pepper, salted peanuts, hints of iodine and tobacco.
Finish: long, peaty and peppery with hints of licorice.
