- An incredibly rare bottling, the oldest Ardbeg officially released ever. Stuart Thompson, then Ardbeg’s Master Distiller takes credit for that creation.
Product description
Bottle No. 185 / 261
An extremely rare bottle of Ardbeg, part of the oldest official edition, a creation of then Master Distiller, Stuart Thompson.
The whisky came from two barrels (no. 3678 and 3679) filled in 1965 and bottled in 2005 at cask strength . Instead of a label, the unique and individually numbered bottles bear the Ardbeg logo, guaranteeing their authenticity. Each bottle is also secured with a stealth mark code to exclude duplication. The bottle is presented on a plinth, in a box with walls made of museum glass and provided with a certificate. Part of the set is a pair of white gloves, in which the bottle should be held and a 50 ml sample of the whisky. The edition consists of 261 original sets. (The tasting note comes from the manufacturer).
Aroma: a light sea breeze blows juicy forest berries, blackberries and peaches, and when droplets of salty water run down the fruit, it's time for chocolate with nuts, sweet vanilla, a hint of tar and peat (...); the second wave comes with raisins, the smell of fruitcake just taken out of the oven, and in the background a whiff of cigar smoke and a trace of resin.
Taste: the first drops in the mouth, and shivers of emotion on the spine, a smokehouse on the seashore, and in it a fish absorbing the smoke of heather and peat, traces of salt on the cheeks..., after a while it's time for dessert, raisins, candied fruit, shortcrust pastry with cherries and whipped cream, and then vanilla, a hint of peat, aromatic espresso, and finally sweet berries, which close the rich palette of flavors.
Finish: dark chocolate with blackcurrant dueling with peat smoke, followed by dried fruit and grains of sea salt… the winner… is Ardbeg.
