Alligator is an untamed bottling of Ardbeg released in 2011.
The name refers to particular casks employed for the maturation process, made of virgin American oak and charred to the highest possible level (so-called “Alligator char”). After taking a look inside the cask the resemblance to alligator skin is indisputable. Here we have Alligator expression released ‘for discussion’ to Ardbeg Committee members prior to being launched for general release. The whisky does not carry age statement but we were told that the youngest whisky used for this release was 10 years old. It was bottled at natural strength of 51.2% abv and without chill-filtration with an outrun of 10,000 bottles.
