RoughStock Distillery, built by Kari and Bryan Schultz in 2005 in Bozeman, Montana, is the first distillery in the state since Prohibition and the first whiskey producer in the state in over a hundred years.
Equipped with a pair of copper stills, it produces bourbon, corn, wheat and malt whiskey. RoughStock Black Label is a single malt distilled twice in copper stills from locally grown barley and aged in new charred American oak barrels. It is a single cask edition from barrel #48-B filled in December 2009 and bottled in January 2013 at cask strength (59.8% abv).
Nose: caramel, toffee, burnt toast, cocoa powder, dried plums, blackcurrants, dried herbs, pine needles, notes of leather and burnt oak.
Palate : rich and spicy, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cloves, bitter orange jam, burnt sugar, espresso and oak.
Finish : long, with notes of sweet dried fruit, caramel, toffee, cinnamon, dark chocolate and oak.
