Product description
The story of the Stroh brand began in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1832. It was then that Boštijan Stroh, after whom the brand was eventually named, started manufacturing liqueurs and brandies.
In time, his offer was enhanced by the addition of a product called Inländer-Rum (domestic rum). Since Austro-Hungary never had access to any sea and so no overseas colonies, instead of making rum based on sugar cane products (molasses or juice), the Austrian manufacturer made his spirit from sugar beet, and tried to reach the rum flavour through addition of various flavourings and colourants. The new spirit soon became popular in the region, and is still readily served, mainly in hot tea and all sorts of punches. At present, however, the situation is reverse to what it was originally – Stroh is made from molasses imported from the Caribbean, and the traditional flavour of the Inländer-Rum is obtained through addition of various essences.
Stroh 60 is one of the three basic expressions of the Austrian rum. Bottled at 60% vol., it is recommended as a cocktail ingredient, especially those cocktails which are served hot. But it can also be added to all sorts of home-made fruit preserves, including jams, jellies and chutneys.
