Product description
The winery was established in 1887 in Vila Nova de Gaia on the banks of the Douro River, initially operating under the name Assumpçao E Fos. Gran Cruz took over the estate, and with it a long tradition in the production of port wines, from the beginning emphasizing key aspects - the selection of appropriate grape varieties, then the selection of appropriate wines, of appropriate quality and values, on which the producer focuses when creating specific labels and maturation, which, carried out in an appropriate way, highlights the features and gives a unique character to the final products. The company owns one of the best locations in the Douro Valley - Quinta de Ventozelo, which covers about 400 hectares of crops, allowing the creation of a rich portfolio of the brand, from simple and accessible wines to the highest quality premium class.
Today, Gran Cruz has the experience of producing outstanding wines that have gained recognition worldwide, are present in about 50 countries and, most importantly, many of them have been awarded medals in their categories. Annual sales are over 10 million bottles.
Port made from selected, hand-picked grapes, produced traditionally, where fermentation is stopped by adding high-proof wine alcohol at the right moment. The wines used in this blend are aged separately, the average age of maturation in oak barrels is 10 years. On the nose it is very subtle and complex, with clear aromas of dried fruit and candied orange peel. On the palate, with its roundness, it perfectly develops fruit flavors combined with a nutty note. The finish is long and somewhat delicate, with a hint of spices appearing.
It tastes best served at a temperature of 14-16 degrees. It is worth doing this, in order to discover the finesse of developing flavors and aromas, in addition to its fruity character. In culinary combinations, it will work well with chocolate-based desserts, with the addition of red fruits and nuts. It will also be a good companion for foie gras and hard cheeses.
