Tomintoul is a medium-sized distillery in Speyside, equipped with two pairs of stills, produces 3.3 million litres of alcohol per year.
Since 2000, the distillery has been owned by Angus Dundee plc., a company owned by the Hillman family, a major player in the blended whisky market. Tomintoul is described by its owners as The Gentle Dram, and is indeed one of the smoothest single malts from Speyside. The Tomintoul presented here is one of the offerings in the popular Small Batch series. After a basic maturation in American oak casks, the whisky was finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Other whiskies in the series were finished in rum, cognac and red wine casks.
