Tamnavulin (the Mill on the Hill in the Gaelic) is fairly new, modern Speyside distillery built in 1966 by Invergordon Distillers Ltd.
Since 1993 it has been owned by Whyte & Mackay, one of the leading producers of blended whisky, acquired by Emperador Inc. in 2014. Tamnavulin was mothballed from1995 to 2007 but currently works at full capacity producing 4 million liters of spirit per annum. Most of the output goes into Whyte & Mackay blends but in recent years the company released sevral interesting single malt expressions. Tamnavulin Oloroso Cask Edition was introduced in October 2021 as Travel Retail exclusive. The whisky was originally aged in American oak barrels then finished in Oloroso sherry casks sourced from Spanish bodegas.
Nose: delicate sherry notes, milk chocolate, vanilla, toffee, grapes, orange peel, apricots, almonds, hints of ginger and toasted oak.
Palate: vanilla custard, chocolate cake, raisins, plums, oranges, sugared peanuts, baked apples, dash of cinnamon and oak.
Finish: medium long, fruity, with notes of toffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, ginger and hints of oak.
