The story of Plantation rums is strictly connected with the French company Maison Ferrand, founded by Alexandre Gabriel in 1989.
His aim was to preserve the time-honoured artisanal methods of spirits production, at the same time introducing some innovations. Maison Ferrand started with the production of Ferrand Cognac. In 1996 a French gin was introduced, and its manufacture made use of the traditional pot stills while they were not engaged in cognac distillation. In 1999 Plantation rum was introduced. The idea behind the brand was to allow the rums to mature in ex-bourbon barrels in the tropics, and then mature them further in France, in French oak barrels that have been used to mature fine French cognac. This second stage of maturation takes place at Château de Bonbonnet in France. The year 2017 brought the acquisition of West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados and a third of the renowned National Rums of Jamaica, which owns Clarendon, Long Pond and Inswood distilleries.
Plantation Rum Australia 2009 Sherry Cask Finish is a rum manufactured at Beenleigh distillery in Australia, was made from molasses and distilled in traditional pot stills. The rum matured in ex-bourbon barrels in the climate of Australia for 11 years, after which it was transferred to France, where it spent another year in a Ferrand barrel made of French oak. Eventually, it spent another 4 months in a barrel that previously held Palo Cortado sherry. Bottled in small batches as a part of the Single Cask collection.
