Portobello Road No. 171 Gin debuted in 2011 in the Ginstitute range. Ginstitute is located in London at 171 Portobello Road and is one of the smallest museums in the metropolis.
It was founded by three friends, former bartenders – Jake Burger, Ged Feltham and Paul Lane, and the culmination of their life mission was to create their own gin. After nine months of testing and experimenting, they decided on a formula containing nine botanicals – Tuscan juniper berries and orris root, Spanish lemon peel, Moroccan and Haitian bitter orange peel, Indonesian nutmeg, cassia bark, coriander seed, licorice root and angelica. Just before the distillation process is complete, a small amount of English sea salt is also added. The gin is distilled from wheat spirit at the Thames Distillery in London under the supervision of the local master distiller Charles Maxwell. In 2014, Portobello Road No. 171 won a gold medal at the San Francisco Spirit Awards.
This gin has a very elegant aromatic profile, juniper, citrus peel, licorice and slightly muted notes of lavender and violets. In the palette, masterfully balanced notes of juniper, coriander, lemongrass, licorice and orange peel. The producer recommends serving it with tonic and a slice of pink grapefruit.
