In the fall of 2021 Bunnahabhain Distillery introduced the 12 years old Cask Strength expression and announced annual releases.
The initial edition was inspired by the tastings that the visitors enjoy at the distillery’s warehouse # 9. Since not every Bunnahabhain fan is able to make a trip to the distillery, master distiller Brendan McCarron decided to give them a chance to experience the tasting it themselves. The whisky comes in its purest form, of natural color, uncut and unchill-filtered. The whisky for the 2022 edition was predominantly matured in first and second fill ex-Oloroso sherry casks with a small percentage of ex-bourbon barrels “to balance out the flavors”. It was released at 56.6% abv.
Nose: creamy milk chocolate, raisins, dried dates, cherries and cranberries, walnuts, caramel, toffee, cinnamon, clove, sherried oak, and a whiff of sea breeze.
Palate: salted caramel, roasted nuts and almonds, milk chocolate, sherry-soaked raisins, black cherries, pears, baked apples dusted with cinnamon, nutmeg and oak.
Finish: pretty long, with notes of milk chocolate, honey, dark berries, salted nuts, hints of pepper, cinnamon, tobacco and oak.
