Product description
Cape Fynbos Gin is the creation of Johan du Toit and Olivier Kirsten, founders of the Grape Grinder Company (the company has been operating since 2010 and is headquartered in the picturesque Paarl Valley).
The name “Fynbos” comes from the Dutch word “fijnbosch,” meaning a family of small-leaved shrubs native to the Western and Eastern Capes of South Africa. Fynbos gin is based on a four-times distilled spirit from white grapes, and the formula lists over 30, mostly local, botanicals. The company does not disclose their full list, and we could not determine the Polish names for those mentioned on the bottle (arctotis, leucospermum, ruschia, stebe, osteosperum, Leucadendron, felicia and sparaxis). Some of the botanicals are macerated, while others are placed in baskets during distillation and exposed to alcohol vapors. We were surprised to learn that there are over 300 registered brands of gin in South Africa; only the UK boasts more. We add a branded copa to the bottle.
Cape Fynbos is a herbal gin, but it is difficult for us to define the elements of its aromatic and flavor bouquet. In addition to herbs, there are notes of juniper, wildflowers, forest floor, orange peel, pepper and cloves. We recommend serving with ice cubes or soda water, Elderflower Tonic is also a good choice.
