The Gladstone Axe is a whisky from the portfolio of Biggar & Leith, a New Jersey-based importer and distributor of food and spirits.
Its patron is William Gladstone, a British politician, four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (Elwyn Gladstone, founder of Biggar & Leith is his great-great-grandson). After ending his political career, William Gladstone's hobby was felling trees; he was often seen with an axe on the family estate in Hawarden. The Gladstone Axe debuted in 2021 in two versions, presented here The Black Axe described as "Rich and Smoky" is a blended malt composed of distillates from Islay and the Highlands, with a predominance of the former.
Nose : toffee, caramel, honey, cocoa powder, apples, pears, black tea, notes of hay, forest floor and peat smoke.
Palate : peat smoke, caramel, honey, vanilla, sweet breakfast cereals, apples, red currants, white pepper, notes of hay and oak.
Finish : medium long, slightly smoky, with notes of vanilla, apples, white pepper and oak tannins.
