Product description
When Spanish ships sailed for the New World in the late 17th century, their holds carried, among other things, barrels of Spanish wine, including sherry.
On the way back, to avoid transporting empty barrels, they were filled with local rum, called Chinguirito. During the journey, the rum had time to react with the oak barrels that had previously held sherry and gain a wider bouquet of aromas and flavors. It became so popular in Spain that it was seen as competition for local spirits. This rum was soon banned in Spain. Hence the name "El Ron Prohibido" - the banned rum. It was not until the end of the 18th century that this ban was lifted, and the Mexican chinguirito trade was seen as a serious source of income for the Spanish treasury. Income that was so badly needed in the war with England. Today, El Prohibido rum is a product of the same spirits company as Corralejo tequila.
Prohibido Reserva 22 Anejo is a molasses-based spirit matured in oak barrels in the solera system. The number 22 in the name does not refer to the age, but to the number of barrels that make up the system prepared for maturing this rum. The first 4 barrels of the system contain walnut shells, peach pits and almond shells, which causes a kind of maceration of the distillate during maturation. The remaining barrels contain a certain amount of fresh sugar cane juice, squeezed during the preparation of molasses for the production of rum.
