Product description
Black Tomato Gin, the creation of two Dutchmen who had never been involved with the spirits industry before, debuted in 2014.
The hobby of one of the creators Leon Meijers is growing black tomatoes, while the other Alfred Sandee is a lifelong gin connoisseur. Black Tomato gin is distilled at Kampen Distillery in Zeeland. The black tomatoes used in its formula are grown organically in southern Sicily, where the groundwater has a slight salinity, which supposedly has a great effect on their taste. After grinding, the tomatoes are macerated in grain alcohol, while the remaining botanicals are processed as separate distillates. All are then mixed and diluted with desalinated local water. Little is known about the other components of the gin formula, of course juniper berries must be among them. Black tomatoes contain a high concentration of anthocyanin, which supposedly prevents cancer, liver disease and circulatory system diseases.
Black Tomato is a one-of-a-kind gin, with a tomato, salt, and notes of juniper and pine needles. It is a must-have ingredient in the Red Snapper cocktail (the “gin” version of Bloody Mary), and it also tastes great with Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic and a basil leaf.
