Bottle No. 14 /1000
Whyte & Mackay Special blended whisky debuted in Glasgow in 1882. About a hundred years later it was the seventh best-selling blended whisky in the UK.
Today, Whyte & Mackay operates as a subsidiary of Philippine-based Emperador Inc. and has a 9% share of the global Scotch whisky market. Whyte & Mackay 40 Years Old is the only blend in the Rare & Prestigious series. It is the creation of blender Richard Paterson, consisting of 70% malt and 30% grain whisky distilled in June 1966. It is a nod to John McIlraith, who worked at Whyte & Mackay for 70 years. John was responsible for blending the blends, then their global distribution, and was eventually appointed managing director. The edition consisted of 1,000 bottles.
Nose : rich sherry tones, dried apricots, figs and plums, black cherries, vanilla, toffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, notes of leather, wax and oak.
Palate : lots of dried fruit, apricots, plums, raisins, bitter orange jam, caramel, licorice, nutmeg, cinnamon, a touch of ginger and sherry-soaked oak.
Finish: long, perfect harmony between sherry notes, dried fruit, spices and oak bitterness.
