Product description
“Private Collection” is one of the most prestigious whisky lines from the Gordon & MacPhail portfolio.
Initially, it received single barrels of whisky selected by the company's directors and bottled in cask strength, over time also with reduced alcohol content, and finally small batch editions with unique finishes. The Caledonian presented here is one of the last stars of the "Private Collection". The whisky distilled on November 3, 1980, spent almost four decades in a refilled hogshead barrel no. 92569 (American oak). Its contents on August 13, 2020 translated into 111 bottles of cask strength whisky (55.4% abv).
Caledonian Distillery was built in Edinburgh in 1855 by Graham Menzies. At the end of the 19th century it was the largest distillery in the United Kingdom, producing 10 million litres of grain spirit per year. It also held the record for the largest distillation column, producing around 4,500 litres of spirit per hour. In the 1980s, three additional stills were installed at the plant for the production of malt whisky. In 1884, Caledonian became the property of the DCL group and continued production for over 100 years. It distilled for the last time in 1988, and 10 years later the property was sold to developers.
