Product description
The Dunedin brand brings memories of Willowbank Distillery, which operated in Dunedin (the second largest city on the New Zealand South Island) from 1974 to 1997.
The New Zealand Single Malt Whisky Company formed in the early 2000s acquired the remaining stock (around 80,000 liters) and now whatever is left resides in the bonded warehouse in Oamaru. Dunedin Double Wood is a blend of 70% Willowbank malt and 30% grain (the latter distilled at Willowbank from un-malted barley) aged in ex-bourbon barrels for six years then transferred into French oak red wine barrels. The barrels were sourced from one of the North Island winery and previously held New Zealand Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Nose: very winey, strawberries, raspberries, black currants, caramel, toffee, cinnamon, clove, milk chocolate, hints of leather and eucalyptus drops.
Palate: raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, raisins, milk chocolate, toffee, dash of black pepper and cinnamon, notes of pine needles, tobacco and oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of mixed berries marmalade, pepper, cinnamon, oak and fading hint of smoke.
