135º East Hyōgo gin debuted in Japan in 2017 as part of Kaikyō Distillery’s lineup. It bears the name of the Akashi Meridian, which runs near the distillery in the city of Akashi at 135 degrees east longitude. The distillery is owned by the Yonezawa family, who have been brewing for centuries, have been making sake since the early 20th century, and recently obtained a license to produce whisky. The gin was formulated by Kimio Yonezawa, a master distiller and blender, who tested over 50 botanicals and selected eight. 135º East Hyogō combines the style of the classic London Dry with Japanese elements. In addition to the traditional juniper berries, angelica root, and coriander seeds, the formula includes cedar, shinso leaves, chrysanthemum, sansho pepper, and yuzu. Botanicals are sourced from local suppliers and distilled separately before being blended with a small amount of distilled sake.
135º East Hyōgo gin captivates with its freshness; in the aromatic bouquet we find juniper berries, lime, mint leaf and licorice "seasoned" a little with pepper and a pinch of cumin. In taste pleasantly spicy, pine needles, juniper, green tea, licorice, ginger and pepper balanced to a small extent by the sweetness of yuzu. We recommend serving with an ice cube or with a delicate tonic, with the addition of a piece of lime and fresh ginger.
