Product description
Mortlach Distillery started producing whisky in 1823 but its early history was fraught with closures and changes of ownership (first licensee, James Finlander sold it in 1831 for £ 270.00).
George Cowie acquired shares in the distillery in 1853 and in 1867 became a sole owner. The Cowie family ran the distillery for over a half of the century; in 1897 they increased the number of stills from three to six and in 1923 they sold the company to Johnnie Walker & Sons. Cowie’s Blue Seal, the oldest expression in the current distillery core range, comprises whisky aged exclusively in ex-sherry casks for two decades. The name “Blue Seal” refers to Alexander Cowie’s rare and special private stock release in 1909.
