The exact date of Jasper Newton (Jack) Daniel cannot be verified since no official document exists to prove it (the courthouse records had been destroyed by fire).
Every year the distillery celebrates the month of September as the birthday of its founder. The company believes that Jack was born that month of 1850 but the only evidence that supports this date is that it appears on Jack’s tombstone. There are two more possible dates of Jack’s birth. Peter Krass, Jack’s biographer, points to January 1849; he wrote in his book Blood & Whiskey that ‘United States Census and tax records (…) prove that he lived from 1849 to 1911’. Finally, the commonly believed date of Jack’s birthday is September 5, 1846. It is known that Jack’s mother died shortly after giving birth. She is buried just outside Lynchburg and although her tombstone has deteriorated the inscription ‘Lucinda Daniel, Died Jan. 29th 1847’ is still readable.
The 150th Birthday edition was introduced in 1999, almost a year prior to Jack’s birthday, and comprises whiskey bottled at 45% abv. As time goes by those bottles are harder and harder to find.
