Product description
Glen Nevis Distillery, based in Campbeltown, was built in 1877 by Duncan MacCallum, then owner of the Glen Scotia Distillery.
The distillery ceased operation in 1923, after a dozen or so years its warehouses were incorporated into the Ardluss Distillery and the resulting facility was adapted for the production and bottling of blended whisky. In the mid-1950s, together with the Glen Scotia distillery, it became the property of A. Gillies & Company. Around 1970, Gillies & Co. took over Amalgamated Distilled Product and established a subsidiary, Glen Nevis Distillery Company. The latter was involved in bottling and distributing Glen Nevis whisky (in single malt, vatted malt and blended versions) until the mid-1980s, when Amalgamated divested its distilling assets to Gibson International. At the same time, Safeway became the owner of the Glen Nevis brand and distributed it exclusively in its own chain of supermarkets. Today, it belongs to Wm Morrison, but has not been produced for a long time.
The Glen Nevis 5 year old presented here comes from the 1980s and was intended for the Italian market. Unfortunately, we know little about its formula, although it seems unlikely that it contains even a drop of whisky from the original Glen Nevis Distillery.
