The Giffards came from the Loire Valley and were involved in the textile trade. The first to break away from the family tradition was Émile Giffard, a graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Poitiers.
Shortly after his studies, he returned to his hometown and opened a pharmacy in the center of Angers. Émile was as devoted to developing recipes for panaceas as he was to alcoholic beverages. His first drink was called Chottin, a bitter aperitif based on quinine. However, the turning point in his career (and life) came in 1885 and the creation of Menthe-Pastille, which allowed him to change his career as a pharmacist to a distiller. Today, the company founded by Émile is still in the hands of the family and is managed by his great-great-grandchildren, siblings Bruno and Edith Giffard. They produce dozens of liqueurs and just as many bar syrups using mainly local fruits and botanicals, which they subject to the traditional maceration process.
Giffard Sour Apple Liqueur debuted under the name Manzana Verde (meaning "green apple") and is produced using concentrated green apple juice. It is a very refreshing drink, in which strong apple notes enrich peaches and green melon. We recommend serving it with an ice cube on summer evenings and in a Sour Apple Martini cocktail.
