Product description
Pineau des Charentes is a regional so-called liqueur wine produced mainly in the departments of Charente and Charente-Maritime in western France by mixing unfermented (or slightly fermented) grape juice in the right proportion with cognac and subjecting the finished mixture to maturation. The story goes that at the end of the 16th century, one of the local winemakers accidentally poured must into a barrel, not knowing that it contained a small amount of eau-de-vie. When he opened the barrel after a few years, he discovered that it contained a new, unique drink.
The main grape varieties in Pierre Ferrand Pineau des Charentes are Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche and Collombard, typical of the region.
The wine is aged for at least 18 months, 12 of which in oak barrels. Its palette includes peaches, plums, figs, honey, roasted nuts and almonds. Recommended to serve chilled as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to cheeses.
Maison Ferrand is a renowned cognac producer based in the 18th-century Château de Bonbonnet, surrounded by vineyards in the Charente region of Cognac.
