Glen Mhor Distillery operated in Inverness from 1892 to 1983. Its buildings stood next to the Caledonian Canal, opposite the Glen Albyn distillery.
In 1972 the plant became part of DCL, but 9 years later the group decided to close it. The buildings were soon demolished and a supermarket and a car park were built in their place. Glen Mhor whisky is slowly fading into oblivion, which makes the 1966 Vintage edition presented here unique. The spirit comes from a refill hogshead sherry cask (no. 3690) and was bottled in June 2011 by Gordon & MacPhail for its Dutch importer, Van Wees. After 44 years of maturation, the contents of the cask translated into 133 bottles of cask strength whisky (52.1% abv).
Nose: surprisingly fresh, ripe apples and plums, quince jelly, roasted malt, toffee, honey, traces of eucalyptus and camphor oil, pepper, notes of tobacco and oak.
Taste: pleasantly balanced, apple pie with cinnamon, quince jelly, raisins, lemon grass, a pinch of pepper, vanilla, notes of oak and hay.
Finish: long and filling, slightly spicy, with notes of mint and oak.
