The word 'Lagavulin' comes from the Gaelic Lag A' Mhullin and means 'the mill in the little valley'.
The distillery, founded in 1816 by John Johnston, is located near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle, once the residence of the island's rulers. Lagavulin Distillery belongs to the Diageo group and, working 7 days a week, produces almost 2.5 million liters of distillate per year. The basic commercial offer is quite modest, mentioning only three versions - 12 years old Cask Strength, 16 years old and Distillers Edition (finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks). From time to time, it is enriched by limited editions, and these always arouse great interest among collectors. Lagavulin 1976 Vintage hit the market in 2006 in a cask strength edition (52.6% abv) limited to 2340 bottles.
