The story of gin begins in July 1945, when British Air Commodore Montgomery Collins arrived in Berlin as one of the British administrators of the. Collins was moved by the enormity of the city's destruction. He pledged his help to rebuild the Berlin Zoo and sponsored a monkey named Max. After leaving the service, Collins remained in Germany and opened a guesthouse in the Black Forest, where he also produced an exquisite gin called "The Wild Monkey" in honor of Max. Gin production continued into the 1970's. After 40 years, the history of gin became of interest to Alexander Stein of a well-known family of distillers, who decided to recreate the legendary beverage. He came to the Black Forest and together with Keller recreated the gin calling it Monkey 47. The number 47 refers to the amount of herbs, plants and fruits used in the production of the liquor.
