Portobello Road London Dry Gin No. 171 / 42%
Portobello Road Gin No. 171 debuted in 2011 in the Ginstitute offering. The Ginstitute is based in London at 171 Portobello Road and is one of the smallest museums in the metropolis.
Its founders are three friends, former bartenders - Jake Burger, Ged Feltham and Paul Lane, and the culmination of their lifelong mission to create their own gin. After nine months of trials and experiments, a formula containing nine botanical ingredients was decided upon - Tuscan juniper berries and orris root, Spanish lemon peel, Moroccan and Haitian bitter orange peel, Indonesian nutmeg, cassia bark, coriander seeds, licorice and angelica roots. Just before the distillation process is completed, a small amount of English sea salt is also added. Gin is distilled from wheat spirit at London's Thames Distillery under the guidance of master distiller Charles Maxwell there. In 2014, Portobello Road No. 171 won a gold medal at the San Francisco Spirit Awards.
This gin has a very elegant aromatic profile, juniper, citrus peels, licorice and slightly muted notes of lavender and violets. The palette masterfully balanced notes of juniper, coriander, lemongrass, licorice and orange peel. The manufacturer recommends serving it with tonic and a piece of pink grapefruit.
