Product description
Caorunn Gin is produced in Speyside at the Balmenach Distillery.
Built in 1824 by James MacGregor, it became the property of the DCL group a hundred years later, and since 1993 has been owned by Inver House Distillers. The distillery's main production is of course whisky, Caorunn joined the offer in 2009. Balmenach imports triple-distilled neutral alcohol; it goes to an evaporator, and from there, in the form of steam, to a copper chamber. There, in turn, there are several shelves with laid out botanicals, which are exposed to the alcohol steam in order to extract the ingredients contained in them. After the process is finished, the distillate is diluted with local water to 41.8% alcohol. The gin’s formula lists juniper berries, coriander seed, lemon and orange peel, angelica root, cassia bark, and a few local ingredients – bog myrtle, heather, milkweed leaves, Coul Blush apples and rowan berries (Caorunn is Gaelic for rowan). The gin is made in small batches, around 1,000 litres each.
Caorunn caresses the nostrils with a fresh, floral aroma of juniper, heather, citrus and a touch of spices. In the taste, juniper is in the foreground, followed by notes of vanilla, citrus and cinnamon. The producer recommends serving it with tonic and a quarter of a red apple.
