In 2010, Highland Park Distillery's offering for the Travel Retail chain included four vintage editions – 1998, 1994, 1973 and 1990.
The key element that distinguished them was the proportion of first and refill casks in which the spirits matured, as well as the varieties of oak from which they were made, European and American. 1998 Vintage was distilled in the year that Highland Park celebrated its 200th anniversary. Aged mainly in American oak casks, it combines sweet elements with notes of peat smoke, reflecting the classic character of the Orkney distillery.
Aroma: sweet and mild, honey, vanilla, barn with hay, lemon pepper, ginger, apricot jam, plums, and in the background peat smoke.
Palate : strong notes of honey and vanilla, nut nougat, cinnamon, traces of nutmeg, burnt oak and delicate smoky tones.
Finish : medium long, malty, vanilla, honey complemented by a hint of spice and peat smoke.
