In the spring of 2018 family owned whisky specialist Gordon & MacPhail (founded 1895) announced cutting their whisky portfolio down from 14 whisky ranges to five.
Fortunately, the company’s signature ‘Connoisseurs Choice’ range has not been phased out (the range was introduced by George Urquhart in the 1960s). Currently the range consists of single cask releases bottled at natural strength. Highland Park 1998 was added to the series on June 18, 2021 as Batch # 21/101. The whisky was aged in first fill bourbon barrel # 5300 for 22 years and bottled of natural color, without chill-filtration and at natural strength of 56.8% abv exclusively for La Maison du Whisky. The barrel yielded 183 bottles.
Nose: gently smoky, vanilla fudge, honey, toffee, apples, pineapple, passion fruit, orange peel, cappuccino, buttered toast, hints of cinnamon and oak.
Palate: smooth, sweet cereals, almond croissant, honey, vanilla, butterscotch, milk chocolate, pineapple, bananas, oranges, touch of licorice and fading hint of smoke.
Finish: medium long and mildly smoky, with notes of vanilla custard, honey, tropical fruits, dash of mixed spice and oak.
