Product description
Etsu Japanese Gin is made at the Asahikawa Distillery located on the island of Hokkaido, the most northern prefecture in Japan. The distillery is owned by the Oenon Holdings, Inc. and produces sake, shōchu and liqueurs.
The Etsu brand is owned by BBC Spirits, the company with headquarters in Bordeaux, which probably contracted Asahikawa for its production. Etsu uses base spirit of a 100% cane neutral spirit and its botanicals include bitter oranges, licorice, angelica root, coriander, Sanshō pepper, tea leaves, yuzu (local citrus similar to grapefruit), juniper and few secret ingredients. They are macerated for 24 hours and distilled in copper pot still, then diluted to bottling proof with water from Taisetsu Mountains. The presentation of Etsu is stunning; the bottle features a geisha sitting on a lotus blossom invoking an image of tranquility. In 2018 Etsu Gin scored double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition. The word “Etsu” translates from Japanese to “Joy”.
Etsu is very elegant gin with floral and fruity notes taking lead while juniper, pepper, coriander and licorice providing supporting role. We highly recommend serving it with just an ice cube or with Fever Tree tonics.
