Product description
Riga Black Balsam Upenu-currant is a Latvian herbal liqueur with the addition of blackcurrant juice, combining the tradition of the famous Riga Black Balsam with modern fruity notes. The recipe for the original Riga Black Balsam dates back to 1752, when the pharmacist Abraham Kunze created it as a healing elixir. The Currant version was created in 2009 as a lighter alternative to the classic, strongly herbal balsam.
The recipe includes extracts from 17 plants, including ginger, mint, oak bark, nutmeg and blackcurrant juice, caramel and honey. The process is based on "single-barrel infusion" - plant ingredients are macerated in spirit and then combined with currant juice and other additives. The mixture matures in clay bottles, which affect the evolution of taste for up to several months after bottling. It tastes great chilled to 6-8°C, served with ice, as a base for cocktails and an addition to coffee, tea and desserts. Today, Riga Black Balsam Upenu-currant is not only an alcohol, but also an element of Latvian heritage. Its history reflects social changes - from a pharmacy panacea, through a drink of the tsar's courts, to a modern product combining tradition with innovation.
The Latvijas Balzams brand is the largest producer of alcoholic beverages in the Baltic countries, headquartered in Riga. The company has about 50% of the market share in Latvia. The history of Latvijas Balzams dates back to 1900, when Riga State Spirits Warehouse No. 1 began operating, which later changed its name to Latvijas Balzams in 1970. The company produces, among other things, the famous Riga Black Balsam, considered the national drink of Latvia.
