Before the Cummings, Cardhu's founders, legalized their activity, Helen Cumming saved quite a few other smugglers by hanging out a flag warning about approaching excisemen.

The distillery, founded in 1968, eventually replaced its predecessor, next-door neighbour, initially also called Clynelish, later renamed Brora.

At the distillery, closed in the 1980s, only traditional dunnage warehouse still operate. These are used to store whiskies used for Murray McDavid bottlings, among others. There are talks about turning the distillery buildings into a hotel.

One of the distilleries located in Dufftown, closed down over thirty years ago. Its maltings is now being used as a warehouse for maturing Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie whiskies, made next door.

One of the six original Classic Malts of Scotland is made in an unassuming distillery, hidden amongst fields and woods in the vaslley of the Spey.

Craigellachie started to be promoted widely as a single malt whisky only a couple of years ago. Before that, it was used almost entirely for blends.
