Château Rieussec is one of the most prestigious estates in the Sauternes appellation, located south of Bordeaux, in a region famous for its sweet wines, created thanks to the magic of the noble rot Botrytis cinerea. The history of this estate dates back to the 18th century, when the vineyards belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon. It is from them that the name “Carmes de Rieussec” originates—a tribute to the order that, for decades, cultivated the vineyards and shaped the region’s winemaking tradition. After the French Revolution, the estate passed into private hands and quickly gained a reputation as one of the region's leading producers. In 1855, during the famous classification of Bordeaux wines, Château Rieussec was recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Sauternes, confirming its highest status.
Today, the estate comprises more than 90 hectares of vineyards, 70 hectares of which are planted with grapevines. The dominant grape variety is Semillon, which gives the wines their body and creaminess, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, which adds freshness and finesse, and a small amount of Muscadelle, which brings aromatic complexity. The vineyards are located on gravelly soils, which promote natural drainage and the concentration of flavors in the grapes. The proximity of the Garonne and Ciron rivers creates ideal conditions for the formation of morning mists, which promote the growth of noble rot—a key element in the production of great Sauternes wines.
This wine is the second wine of Château Rieussec—meaning it is made largely from the same vineyards as the estate’s flagship wine, but from harvests or lots that have undergone a slightly different selection process. It elegantly embodies everything one would expect from a Sauternes—sweetness, combined with exceptional freshness and a wealth of aromas.
Appearance: An intensely golden, elegant color with amber highlights as it matures in the glass.
Aroma: The nose reveals notes of dried apricots, figs, and orange peel, as well as delicate hints of honey and white flowers.Subtle notes of toasted wood and a hint of mint or a minty freshness emerge in the background.
Taste: On the palate, the wine is elegantly sweet, with very good acidity, which gives it lightness and a certain freshness. The flavor of dried fruits—apricots, figs—blends with a hint of citrus zest, and the finish offers a delicate minerality and notes of toasted oak.
Food Pairings: It pairs perfectly with foie gras, desserts made with white fruits and creams, blue-veined cheeses, or as a luxurious dish—even as a way to celebrate the moment. At the same time, it pairs well with delicate spices and Asian ingredients.
