
The original Port Charlotte Distillery was funded by Colin Campbell in 1829. The distillery ceased operations in 1929 but the brand was resurrected by the Bruichladdich Distillery owners and re-launched in the new millennium.
Bruichladdich Distillery resumed operations in 2001 under ownership of the group of private investors. On May 29th they started distilling from barley malted to specification of 40 ppm and the outcome produced Port Charlotte brand. The initial edition of Port Charlotte single malt called Evolution was launched in 2006. The whisky was aged in ex-bourbon barrels for 5 years and bottled at natural strength of 63.5% abv with an outrun of 6038 bottles. Description PC5 refers to the whisky age.
Nose: smoky and sweet, vanilla, icing sugar, milk chocolate, apples, peaches, orange peel, moist hay, hints of geranium and a whiff of sea breeze.
Palate: rich and powerful, peat smoke, apples, grapes, gooseberries, caramel, honey, licorice, dash of pepper and touch of iodine.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of peat smoke, sea salt, caramel, cocoa powder, pepper and cigar ash.
