Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

Trudno powiedzieć czy wśród wielbicieli whisky więcej jest zwolenników czy krytyków dorocznego dzieła autorstwa Jima Murray’a, Whisky Bible. Wybory i oceny zawarte w publikacji poddawane są zawsze srogiej krytyce. Nie zmienia to faktu, że „Biblia” Murray’a niezmiennie, co roku, staje się bestsellerem. A to oznacza, że niezależnie od wywoływanych kontrowersji, jest to pozycja ważna i pozostająca nie bez wpływu na kształt rynku whisky na świecie. Whisky wysoko oceniane przez Jima Murray’a, a w szczególności te z samego szczytu jego rankingu, są kupowane chętnie, nawet jeśli ich cena podskakuje znacznie tuż po opublikowaniu kolejnej edycji „Biblii”. Dzieje się tak niechybnie, nawet jeśli zwyciężczyni w danym roku nie pochodzi z jakoś specjalnie limitowanej edycji.

Opublikowana właśnie tegoroczna edycja po raz trzeci z rzędu przyznaje tytuł najlepszej whisky świata trunkowi ze Stanów Zjednoczonych. Jest to, zdaniem autora książki, William Larue Weller 128.2 Proof, burbon z Kentucky, z destylarni Buffalo Trace. Whiskey ta butelkowana była bez rozcieńczania (stosowany w US termin to „uncut”), bez filtrowania, o mocy 64,1%, czyli właśnie 128,2 Proof w systemie amerykańskim. W zasypie zastosowano – jak przystało na burbon – kukurydzę, ale także pszenicę i słodowany jęczmień z Północnej Dakoty. Destylacja miała miejsce zimą 2005 roku, a whiskey spędziła 12 i pół roku w beczkach. Dokładnie rzecz biorąc, w 155 beczkach. A przynajmniej tyle wyselekcjonowano do zestawienia tej edycji.

Na drugim miejscu uplasowała się bardziej swojska Glen Grant 18yo – po raz trzeci z rzędu w pierwszej trójce. Mowa o oficjalnej edycji whisky pochodzącej z destylarni w Rothes w Speyside. Jednocześnie Glen Grant 18yo OB znalazła się na czele kategorii „Scotch Whisky”. Na trzecim miejscu znalazła się amerykańska żytniówka, Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye 127.2 Proof. Ta również, podobnie jak zwyciężczyni, pochodzi z destylarni Buffalo Trace w Kentucky.
